Prayer Guide Day Seven

Staying Out of Harms Way – Matthew 6:13 & Ephesians 6:12

It is amazing to me the amount of social concern that exists around physical safety. Today cars have airbags and collision avoidance systems. I probably shouldn’t admit that my first couple of cars didn’t even have seat belts. It is against the law to drive around with young children if they aren’t in a car seat, and riding a bike without a helmet will get you really dirty looks. I don’t have a problem with any of this, but I must confess that sometimes I rebel and don’t put my seat belt on until I reach the end of the driveway.

Our greatest dangers though are not physical they are spiritual. In verse 13 Jesus teaches the disciples to pray, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” A bad car accident without a seatbelt may bruise your head or even end your physical life. A collision with temptation may bruise your soul, ruin your family or ultimately bring spiritual death.

Temptation and evil are not words made up for scary stories, they are real. You have an enemy. 1Peter 5:8 describes your enemy as a roaring lion, prowling around, seeking someone to devour. Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places.

This is a battle you cannot win on your own, but there is really good news here: God is greater than your enemy (1John 4:4). Cry out to Him
